Ahs is the one they call “coward girl”.
But ever since she was young, she has dreamed of joining the ranks of the guardians, powerful protectors of weaker planets. With the help of a loudmouthed friend and fueled by a haunting memory, Ahs enters the Academy’s selection process; a grueling series of unusually difficult tests and trials meant to see if she has what it takes to become a guardian-in-training. When a new danger arises that threatens Ahs standing at school, she must decide which is more important–acceptance of others or true courage.
From the universe of Becoming Human comes this short story about one girl’s quest for bravery, for fans of Skyward and Enders Game.

I was granted complimentary access to Braving Stars as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with Silver Dagger Book Tours. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.
I absolutely loved Becoming Human when I read it last year, so when Braving Stars came up for review with one of my usual tour companies I jumped at the chance to sign up. Regrets? None at all!
In Becoming Human, one of the main characters we followed was a young guardian fresh out of the academy, but we didn’t get any of her life and adventures before being thrust into the impending invasion du jour. In Braving Stars we follow Ahs, a girl with big dreams who is trying to get accepted into that very same prestigious school to also become a guardian, just like everyone else in her family has done before her. Unfortunately for Ahs, her past refuses to stay in the past and may stand in the way of her success.
This novella was too short! I want more! I loved getting so much more world-building for the Becoming Human universe, and this has definitely wet my appetite for another full-length novel. My praises for Becoming Human stand for Braving Stars as well; if ever there was a prime example to hold up for the YA category of science fiction, this is it, and I wish this existed when I was a teen. I always loved science fiction and nothing was ever going to stop me from convincing my high school AP English teachers that my latest adult sci-fi read fit the requirements for the latest independent novel study, but how much better would those experiences have been if the protagonist was relatable to me at the time as a teenager? This is all the hard hitting sci-fi wonder of adult science fiction, but with the impulsive magic of YA fiction, and I love it.
