To celebrate the novel’s upcoming release, I’m holding a character symbols tournament biweekly through to late September, right before book launch. Vote for your favourite character symbols in all of the sketch rounds, and the two most voted symbols from each round will go on to the revision round to become fully realized pieces of art.
Week of July 12: Competitors round 1 of 2
Week of July 26: Competitors round 2 of 2
Week of August 9: Leila, Naomi, and the Sisters
Week of August 23: Brontes and the Senators (note that I won’t be doing ALL of them)
Week of September 6: Misc. Palace Staff
Week of September 20: Top 10 designs revision round part 1 of 2
Week of September 27: Top 10 designs revision round part 2 of 2
Finale Part 2 of 2
Winning Senator Design #2
Hylas, Senator
The other winner from the Brontes & Senators round was young Hylas.
I don’t want to say too much about Hylas as a character because he wasn’t exactly in The Savior’s Champion so saying too much would be giving spoilers for TSS. What I will say is what I said during the sketch round: He’s just barely in his 20s and SO not ready to be a senator. He was brought in as a squire, but when senators started disappearing and Brontes decided to bolster his numbers, this poor unprepared boy got a promotion he wasn’t ready for.
Winning Sisters Design #1
Pippa, Savior’s Sister
Our first winner from the Leila, Naomi & Sisters round is Pippa, whose proposed symbol was a duck and a daisy.
Pippa is one of the Savior’s adopted sisters. She’s sweet, eager to please, and forever innocent. She’s developmentally delayed, but welcomed and treated as an equal among her sisters. Not all of the competitors in the Sovereign’s Tournament are as kind and respectful to her as they should be, and Leila is having none of it. I paired a flower with another symbol for everyone during the Savior’s sisters round, so Pippa is a duck and a daisy. The daisy represents her purity and innocence. The duck is because Leila calls Pippa her little duck.
If I’m being completely honest, this is my favourite design from part 2, not because I liked the concept best, but because I just freakin’ love this duck!
Winning Sisters Design #2
Naomi, Tobias’ Sister
Although everyone had a different other vote in the sisters round, everyone loved Naomi’s concept. I’m afraid I ruined the concept with my colour choices, though! Be honest, what do you think?
This is Tobias’ sister, not a member of the Savior’s court, but I included her in that round to increase the numbers and because she’s sister to one of our lead characters even if it’s not the Savior. Naomi was involved in an accident some time before the start of TSC and TSS, leaving her partially paralyzed. She struggles with pain and her limited mobility, but most days she’s bright and strong and determined to live the best life she can. Her symbol is a koi fish swimming between a pair of magnolia blossoms. Both of these things have many meanings, but both can mean perseverance and strength.
Winning Misc. Palace Staff Design #1
Asher, Leila’s Door Guard
One of the winners from the Misc. Palace Staff round was Asher, Leila’s door guard, who I decided should be represented with a rabbit wielding a sword.
Asher is Leila’s door guard, and as author Jenna Moreci says, he’s a Himbo. He’s gorgeous, he’s free and loose, and he is not the sharpest tool in the shed. His symbol is a rabbit wielding a sword because he’s here to try to perform his duty to the best of his abilities, but he’s neither as strong nor as smart as he thinks he is.
Winning Misc. Palace Staff Design #2
Talos, Slave Muscle
The other (perhaps ore popular) winning design from the Misc. Palace Staff round was Talos. I think he got the vots because of this adorable doggy face, so like the ret of the designs that I re-drew for the final illustrations, I traced the dog from my sketch exactly before improving the kitten.
On the street team we’ve been calling him Leather Daddy, which was originally meant entirely innocently, but… Talos was in The Savior’s Champion, but we didn’t get his name in that one because the competitors had no reason to know it. To them, he was the leather-clad torturer slowly carving them up until someone lost control in the “Stay Calm” challenge. In The Savior’s Sister we get to know who he is when he isn’t doing Brontes’ bidding, and that’s a big teddy bear with fatherly instincts. Let’s just say Leila thinks of him as an uncle. For Talos, I’ve drawn a large dog modelled on a pit-bull, guarding a kitten.
