Single Parents Rock! is the story of a 5 year old named Shay celebrating her birthday. She talks about her awesome single parent mother, her awesome strong and independent grandmother, and all the different family structures her party guests have. It’s a cute, quick read that normalizes single parent families and opens the conversation about what different families look like.
The artwork is colourful and adorable. I like the simplified cell shading style with the very soft blush touches. It’s nice to see a children’s book that doesn’t obviously stand out as 3-4 character poses re-stamped in every scene.
Overall I enjoyed it and I would definitely recommend this to any parents, teachers, or other caregivers who want to celebrate single parents or discuss different types of families with their kids.
