Lonely Regency romance writer travels to the future, meets her fans, dips into a pearly swimming pool, and falls for its owner. Can she ever go home again…
If Jane Austen’s novels had never ever existed, would we have rom-com movies and women’s fiction? But the young writer is discouraged by a publisher’s rejection and ready to give up writing. And an unwelcome marriage proposal she has rashly accepted spells her doom.
Someone must save history and Jane Austen! When a stranger calls and claims to be an interested publisher, a desperate Jane agrees to go with him to his office. That office turns out to be in the future. And it’s not an office, but a bookstore in southern California in 2024 where fans of Jane Austen gather every month to discuss her works.
Jane greets the Jane Austen Superfan Club, only to find that superfans can be super picky. Discouraged by their critiques, Jane wants different adventures. Even deadly, dangerous ones. And oh, yes! Romantic ones.
Her “publisher” had hoped to inspire Jane’s writing by showing her a book club devoted to her writing. But when she meets a tall, handsome superfan, Jane decides to chart her own course. She disappears with her new friend, and history may have to save itself…

Excerpt
The tall man from the back at last spoke. “Jane, my name is Will Fleming.”
All she could see of him was a shock of curly light brown hair and blue eyes. He dodged to the right and left, trying to see Jane. Failing a clear view, he stood up. And up and up. The man was quite tall. No wonder his head had been higher than the rest. She preferred to see him this way, fully upright, though his gaze was a bit too steady and his eyes far too blue. Blue like the cloudless sky outside, yet a paler version.
Instead of aiming a question at her, he smiled and turned to address the audience. “Remember, folks, for this visit Janet Arlington is Jane Austen, at age twenty-six. We do not want to debate her or insult Jane. She’s not in costume, and she’s not a LARPer. Think of Janet as the actual author and respect her intentions.”
“Thanks for the joke,” George said from the corner. “We all know that Will secretly wears a Robin Hood costume on LARP cruises.”
Claire recovered by asking, “And for us old people—what’s LARP?”
“Live-action role-playing, or LARP for short. It’s nothing to do with today’s meeting.”
The audience tittered. Jane felt the strange disjointedness of her situation, being the “real” Jane and yet not the real one, since she had time traveled her and was actually fooling these people.
With their cropped hairstyles and minimal clothing, their naively open faces so lacking in proper reserve, she had no wish to trick them. In her time, faces were always guarded and speech thought out carefully, especially by young women. These people were noisy with raw emotion, vulnerable to judgment and ridicule. She was already getting ideas to write ridiculous things about them. But they were enjoying themselves.
Jane might have to enjoy herself too. And with the tall, blue-eyed man standing there, waiting to ask his question, she was prepared to do so.
