Excerpt
Suddenly the sow was there, not twenty metres away, and charging hard. They were trapped. They could try to turn back and get away, but they couldn’t hope to outrun an angry grizzly.
“Marion, drop to the ground and play dead!” shouted Gunther. “I’m going to try to distract it so you can get away.”
“No, Gunther, don’t do anything foolish! If we back away slowly, maybe she’ll see us as not a threat to her cubs.”
The bear came on, hackles raised, switching its focus from one to the other, trying to see which one was most dangerous to her family. Its pace slowed, and it seemed to start planning, deliberating how it was going to attack. A small part of Gunther’s brain marvelled at this. He had never heard of this kind of animal behaviour before.
Marion had been slightly behind and was closer to the switchback they had just passed. She thought she might be able to creep slowly back that way, but she was frozen in fear at the thought of being mauled by this angry beast. Seemingly a million thoughts ran through her mind, but she remained unable to will her legs to move. She had never before known fear of this kind. She was literally paralyzed with it. She began to cry tears of frustration at her lack of will to save herself. She saw flashes of her life ending on that lonely slope.
