Excerpt
She was now certain to do whatever it took to fly, soar, and enjoy the view from above. Mona made a blanket from some leaves to cover herself. It felt safe, warm, and relaxing. It was perfect.
“I am ready now,” said Mona in a peaceful voice.
She closed her eyes, took three deep breaths, and peacefully began to daydream.

I was granted complimentary access to The Magic of Daydreaming by Kyra Kalweit and Dayán Mantecón Roldán as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with Goddess Fish Promotions. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.
The Magic of Daydreaming tells the story of a fluffy purple bug named Mona who wants to learn how to fly. She finds a butterfly who encourages her to fly in her daydreams, which leads us on an adventure of Mona finding a place to safely daydream where she won’t be in anyone else’s way, and she eventually constructs a cacoon and dreams about flight as she transforms. It’s cute, it’s exactly the sort of uplifting “if you can dream it you can be it” message kids should hear at the target audience age, and I give bonus points for using my favourite type of butterfly (the Monarch) for the butterfly character!
With that said, the start of the story is a bit clunky. It quite literally starts with the phrase “This is the story of,” which is like starting your highschool essays with “In this essay I will…” (which every teacher begs their students not to do!) I actually skipped over this first page thinking it was an optional intro, but the next page was clearly not the start of the story so I had to go back.
I’m also torn on the positive interpretation that this little purple mystery bug who wants to fly happens to have the ability to metamorphose into a butterfly could be construed as a metaphor for trans kids living their truth, and the more cynical interpretation that we’re promising kids magical transformations to achieve things that might be impossible (rather than offering something more attainable like assisted flight instead of growing wings.)
The illustrations are fun, colourful, and engaging, and I appreciate the fact that the text spaces are also colourful and illustrated but not in a way that is distracting or makes the text difficult to read.
